A little bit about the history of Pittsburgh
The early French and British explorers discovered that the area between Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where they meet to form Ohio was very important and both of them tried to take it. Eventually, the area passed to the British and they built Fort Pitt in the area.
Around Fort Pitt was created a village and it was named Pittsburgh by General John Forbes. Forbes was a Scot and this is why he probably chose this way to name the village, similar to Edinburgh. After the American War of Independence, the village began growing rapidly and it soon became a very important metropolitan center of the Allegheny region.
Something that is not very well known is that Pittsburgh was the first Gateway to the West. The first explorers used it as a base for their explorations. This is one of the reasons that we owe a lot to this historic city.
The war of 1812 cut off the supply of British goods and that forced Americans to start producing stuff for themselves. Especially in Pittsburgh, large quantities of iron, brass, tin, and glass began producing. Before the mid of the century, Pittsburgh was the biggest city west of Allegheny mountains.
In 1877 Pittsburgh was one of the first cities to began the mass production of steel and during both of World Wars, it supplied the American Army with vast quantities of steel thus helping our protectors to achieve their goals.
Since that time Pittsburgh has evolved into a very lively metropolitan center that continues to grow even to this day.
