Architecture of Seattle

Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region. Through the long years of its existence, Seattle's architecture has been influenced by many civilizations and cultures that have passed through the city. This way Seattle has managed to create its own architectural style that has influenced many other cities all over the world.


Before the Europeans settle in the region, the largest building in the area was the Old Man House, a longhouse that served as the residence for the chiefs of Suquamish people. It survived until 1870 when it was burned by the United States government. Suquamish people had many more buildings in the area but today almost none of them survive in the city of Seattle. While most of the Suquamish buildings are nothing more than archeological sites today, their style has influenced modern architecture and you can see many building around the city that will remind you of the native American tribe.


In the last decades of the 19th century two prominent architects, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart and Donald McKay built some memorable buildings in the Pacific city. Unfortunately, none of their work in Seattle survived. On the contrary, some of their buildings have survived in Vancouver. Nonetheless, their style has influenced their successors and you can still see the traces of their designs in many buildings around the city.


The 1889 fire destroyed a big part of the town and almost brought Seattle to its knees. Of course, the city managed to recover after that and many beautiful buildings were created after that. Skilled architects such as Elmer H. Fisher, Charles Herbert Bebb, and Louis Leonard Mendel did their best to provide the city with buildings of memorable beauty and function. Many of them survive to this day, such as University Height School, William Walker House and the First Church of Christ.


During the 20th century, the architecture of the city continued to evolve and create marvelous buildings such as the Space Needle that has become a trademark of the city. Moreover, if you take a walk around the city you can enjoy many skyscrapers such as the Rainier Tower or Russell Investments Center.
